There are around 70 million stray animals existing in the U.S. Of this 70 million, barely about six to eight million cats and dogs enter the nation’s 3,500 shelters annually, according to the Humane Society of the United States. Almost 10 percent of animals entering shelters have been spayed or neutered, which is ambiguous considering in just six years, one un-spayed female dog and her offspring can create 67,000 dogs and one un-spayed female cat and her offspring can produce 420 thousand kittens in seven years, reports Watatuga Humane Society. In the world there is a total of 480 million stray dogs. According to the CAROcat PROJECT there is a total of 480 million which is the same exact number of stray dogs. The National Council on Pet Population Study and Policy (NCPPSP) established that less than 2% of cats and only 15 to 20% of dogs are returned to their loved ones, the owners.

With regards to Malta there are no statistics found, but still there is large amount of stray dogs and cats. There are a lot of non profit organizations that help about this issue. The MSPCA (Malta Society For The Protection And Care Of Animals) main mission is to build a new intention is to build MSPCA Re-Homing Centre to take good care for the hundreds of stray and abandoned dogs and cats on the island. There is also the CFAS (Carers for Stray and Abandoned Felines) has since grown into a shelter for over 250 cats and kittens.

Throughout these years CSAF has provided thousands of cats with medical care and assistance. Today the team of Volunteers work brutally to ensure that these cats and often many others get the care and attention they need and be entitled to. Another non-profit organisation is AAA (Association for Abandoned Animals). Their aim is to rescue and shelter the poor left alone and ignored animals in the community.

There are many ways of what can an individual do in order to decrease the number of stray animals. Spaying and neutering the pet is the best thing that one can do to help keep from continuing pet overpopulation. Instead of purchasing a pet from a breeder or pet store, it is highly recommended to adopt. Microchipping the pet is also fundamental. Microchips can reunite lost pets with their owners quickly, easily, and efficiently. When an individual microchip his/her pet, it provides a peace of mind that should the pet become lost, they will be returned to his/her owner. Sharing the importance of spaying and neutering with friends and neighbors is can be another solution. Before one adopt or, buy a pet one should always understand the commitment that one is making. Dogs and cats can live upwards to thirteen to fifteen years and some even longer. One should evaluate his/her lifestyle and determine if bringing a pet at home is the best both for the pet and the owner.

A pet require patience and time. One also needs to determine what type of pet he/she is looking for and choose a breed that best fits the life of way. Helping to get around and pay attention for homeless animals by becoming a foster parent to a shelter pet. Being a foster pet parent will lead the way to fewer shelter pets being put down and gives pets more time to find their forever homes while being in a temporary home filled with love. Last and not least, one can make a difference in supporting the shelters. Helping can be as easy as liking us on Facebook and sharing our social media content with friends and family.
