Review of My Project

First of all, for this particular unit, I decided to do something different. We had to tackle a controversial issue. I chose to do about abortion. For me, abortion is controversial due to many reasons.

I decided to do an animated feature. It was something that I had never done before and I was very interested in doing so. Like every other project that I did, I do believe that there are strengths, weaknesses, and things that could be arranged if I would do it again. First of all the main concept behind this project was to be impartial and objective and I do believe that I achieved that in my project. I have done a lot of research before I have written the script of the feature. The research that I searched was giving a definition of abortion, how to deal with abortion, the fact that there are people against or in favor. I also looked into how others deal with this sensitive topic and projects that were done in the past. In my research, I also mentioned books and theories that do make sense in the way of how to deal with such a sensitive topic and at the same time how to show the message to the audience out there.

With regards to the script, I do believe that it was quite straight to the point. I mainly focused on what can the options be while dealing with abortion, the types of abortions that exist, and their procedure. The visuals looked fine as well. I have managed to put a neutral view of the subject and tried my best to explain that there are different laws around the world when it comes to abortion and that

in some countries or states, abortion is not allowed unless your family grants you the right to do so. Another thing that I liked about my feature was I conveyed everything straight to the point. A short version of this expression is to the point. This has the same meaning and has existed since around the early-1800s. Adding straight gives it more emphasis. Knowing your weaknesses is as important as knowing your strengths.

If I were to do this feature again, I would change the voice-over. I could have used my potential and used my voice instead of using an automatic robotic voice. Another point that I noticed that could be improved was the fact that I did not mainly focus on abortion in Malta. It would have made it more interesting to tackle a local subject. In my feature, I mentioned that every state's laws are different. In that particular stance, I could have mentioned the states by names not just referring to states in general. After I presented the project in class, I had my classmates which gave me a lot of feedback. A lot of strengths and weaknesses were mentioned. One point mentioned was that I left the gender of the male out. It was stated that there should be a balance between masculinity and females. Another point mentioned was that in minutes 00:40-00:46, there was a jump cut in the voice-over edit, and this made the audio sound undesirable. I noticed this mistake when it was mentioned because while editing I did not notice it at all.

Another point mentioned was that I could have mentioned and researched statistics or charts that show data upon which these conclusions have been made. I could have improved was with regards to technically. In some frames the pictures were cluttered, especially when popping up the options a

woman has when she falls pregnant. Instead of what I have done, a simple list top of each other could have been done easily. I would have avoided the people in each shot. Something that could have been avoided was having many people in each scene. That might have distracted the audience when looking at it visually.

On a positive note, the main message to give to the audience was that abortion is a choice that every woman has and should have. This was clearly seen in the feature and my peers stated this as well after seeing my feature. Another point mentioned was that it seemed difficult to tackle such a sensitive topic using animation. Abortion is clearly made upon facts and discussions and debates since one can be either in favor or against abortion. For next time I will try my best not to limit myself just to one thing. During last year I explored also photography and I do feel that I aced them. Maybe for next time, I could have used my skills to create photographs or a magazine using my own photographs.
