First of all, I would start by giving information about Boris Johnson himself. He is is a British politician and writer serving as the prime minister of the United Kingdom and leader of the Conservative Party since July 2019. His message to promise to “level up and unite the country” has been a central message since the current UK government came to power in 2019. During the election of that year, the slogan was the counterpart to the promise to “get Brexit done”, providing one of history’s simplest plans for government. Step 1: get Brexit done. Step 2: level up.

During this speech, Boris Johnson was forced to defend himself publicly after his rambling delivery of a high-profile speech to business leaders led to fresh questions about his performance as prime minister. Mr Johnson compared himself to Moses, made “vroom, vroom” car noises, trying to make others laugh. He forgot his words, fell silent for almost half a minute after losing his place in his text and asked his audience of senior business executives to put their hands up if they had visited Peppa Pig World.

Tensions between the government and business have lingered after lengthy and strained negotiations during Britain’s exit from the European Union. Much of British business had argued that Brexit would hinder deals with the E.U., a key trade partner. That could be the reason why Boris Johnson lost his words.
