First of all, I want to begin by explaining my intention and goal for this assignment. We had to do a project about anything that we want and the main focus was on the language. As I mentioned before, I went out of my comfort zone and decided to tackle the issue of racism. There were a lot of things to tackle about this topic. I decided to tackle how foreigners who work in Malta are treated and if they are treated the same as the Maltese residents.
Like every other project that I did, I do believe that this project had its strengths and weaknesses. Something that I would mention for my project is my effort and time management. Even though it was a stressful week, I took the opportunity to go out and film everything all by myself. It was actually the first time for me since usually, I would have someone with me to help me with taking the shots. The second point is that I do think that the message came out well and was well understood. I decided to do the voice-over in the Maltese language and I do think that I aced it. The fact that I did two interviews, was really helpful. Apart from the fact that they were helpful, they gave the public information that maybe people out there do not know. For example, Charles Sammut from Imperium Europa stated that Imperium Europa do not hate people that are black and maybe that can change people's mind about Imperium Europa.
From the focus group, there was a lot of positive feedback mentioned. The planning that I did and the actual feature were the same, apart from the fact that I took different shots. Someone mentioned the fact that it was like a conversation type of feature, where the audience is ready to hear and listen to these people. It was mentioned as well that from this interview, one would learn that people should mention and talk about it more in public. As I mentioned before this feature had also its weaknesses. The first weakness that both I saw and my classmates mentioned was the audio. During the whole feature, the audio level was not always the same and my classmates also mentioned the interview with Charles Sammut from Imperium Europa could have improved a lot. Another point mentioned was that some shots could have been different.
As mentioned both by the lecturer and in the focus group, this feature lacked the rule of thirds. Visually wise, the rule of thirds is the most essential tool. Something that was mentioned by my classmates was that for the interview with Bernard Galea from Partit Popolari, I could have easily used a split-screen instead of doing half screen and the rest was black and without any attraction. In class, the last part of the feature was mentioned. In the last part, I did a statement and that statement is biased and might have ruined the feature, especially if it was posted on any social media platform. Apart from audio and visuals, there was something else mentioned. Someone mentioned that a vox-pop would have made the feature better. Apart from pros and cons, in the focus groups I asked them what they would have done differently and future improvements.
Someone from the focus group stated that if she would have done the feature, she would have interviewed a person who passed from this experience to tackle the human aspect. Another point mentioned was taking more and different shots. For next time, it would have been much better if I explored more with regards to shots, rather than taking visuals as usual.
