COVID-19 is a disease caused by a new strain of coronavirus / ‘CO' stands for corona, 'VI' for virus, and 'D' for disease //
These are the different types of Covid- nineteen (19) vaccines; Pfizer, Astra Zeneca, Johnson and Johnson and Moderna //
The Pfizer vaccine is the first on the market that consists of actual genetic information from a virus in the form of messenger RNA, or mRNA / For those who do not know, mRNA is a type of molecule whose usual job is to transport copies of genetic instructions around a cell to guide the assembly of proteins //
Astra Zeneca is a viral vector vaccine for the prevention of COVID- nineteen (19) / It was developed by Oxford University and AstraZeneca, and is given by intramuscular injection //
The Johnson & Johnson COVID- nineteen (19) vaccine, was developed by Janssen Pharmaceuticals of Johnson & Johnson / It is a single-dose vaccine, which differentiates it from two-dose (2) COVID- nineteen (19) vaccines, such as the ones from Pfizer and Moderna //
The Moderna vaccine statistically shows to have an efficacy of approximately ninety-two (92) per cent in protecting against COVID-19, starting fourteen (14) days after the first dose.
Influenza vaccines, are vaccines that protect against infection by influenza viruses. New versions of the vaccines are developed twice (2) a year, as the influenza virus rapidly changes //
Mortality for COVID- nineteen (19) appears higher than for influenza, especially seasonal influenza / Children are important drivers of influenza virus transmission in the community / For COVID- nineteen (19) virus, initial data indicates that children are less affected than adults and that clinical attack rates in the zero to nineteen (0-19) age group are low//
Influenza has a shorter median incubation period (the time from infection to appearance of symptoms) and a shorter serial interval (the time between successive cases) than COVID-19 virus //
Moderna received nearly one (1) billion dollars for its COVID-19 vaccine development / Pfizer, with its German partner BioNTech, will be given one point nine five (1.95) billion dollars for one hundred million (100,000,000) doses / Johnson & Johnson received four hundred and fifty six (456) million dollars for vaccine research and development / AstraZeneca is set to receive one point two billion (1.2) dollars //
According to IMS Health , there are one point sixty-one billion dollars in revenue / Yearly the cost of influenza vaccine cost around one hundred fourthy seven point eight million (147.8 million) dollars /
When comparing the covid-19 vaccine and the influenza vaccine, one notices that
COVID- nineteen (19) and influenza viruses have a similar disease presentation / That is, they both cause respiratory distress raging from asymptomatic, mild , severe and may even cause death //
Both viruses are transmitted by contact and droplets / As a result, the same public health measures, such as hand hygiene and good respiratory etiquette, are important actions that one can take to prevent infection //
Influenza has a shorter median incubation period (the time from infection to appearance of symptoms) and a shorter serial interval (the time between successive cases) than COVID-19 virus / The serial interval for COVID- nineteen (19) virus is estimated to be five to six (5-6) days, while for influenza virus, the serial interval is three (3) days //
Children are important drivers of influenza virus transmission in the community. For COVID-19 virus, initial data indicates that children are less affected than adults .
The Public Health and the Medical authorities recommends that every individual should take the Covid-19 vaccine / For those who are sceptical about the Covid- nineteen (19) vaccine, here is a message from Professor Charmaine Gauci //
